Welcome to the Screw Big Oil Political Page.
Screw Big Oil thinks everyone should know and understand the politics of oil. Like you, or me, each candidate or
elected official has their own opinion on these high gas prices. From what we see, other than decreasing the gas tax
on state and federal levels, there is not much any of them can do for short term relief. Even the gas tax comes at a
cost. On this page we will try to show you some important view, analyze them, and provide links to government
resources.

President Bush On Gas
President Bush wants to drill for oil offshore and in the ANWR. He wants
to also use a shale for oil. He also wants to convert abandoned military
bases to build refineries. So far we agree, he just doesn't offer enough
of a qualified plan for alternative fuels, and doesn't put enough pressure
on our trading partners that provide oil. Here are some facts:
The ANWAR (see image below): Numbers are bandied about by both
sides republicans and democrats) - those for drilling say that there is 30
years-worth of Saudi imports of oil available, and that drilling will enhance
the national security and lessen dependence on imported oil (especially
from the volatile Middle East.) Opponents say that the ANWR will supply
less than 3% of US annual oil use, and that the price for drilling this small
amount of oil will be the destruction of unspoiled land and the ANWR's
flora and fauna. It is said that drilling here can be done safely and
efferently.
Refineries: The United States has not built a new refinery in over 30
years. There is currently one being planned in South Dakota, but it must
pass that states strict air quality laws. We can drill all we want, but
without new refineries, and upgrading the ones we have, we will still have
to import gasoline (not oil) to meet our demand. This is extremely costly.
We believe that using some closed military bases is a great idea, and it
can also boost the local economy of those regions.
Offshore drilling: This is very controversial. Even if the congress lifts it's
ban, and the president lifts the executive ban, it would be up to each
state to allow or deny it. Governor Shwartzenager (R. CA) has already
said that his state would not allow any more than is already there.
Meanwhile the governor of Florida says it is a good idea and it can be
done without disturbing the environment. There is a lot of oil out there
(see picture 2 below) and 18,000,000,000 barrels would certainly help
our oil independence.
Shale: This process (turning shale to oil) can provide the U.S with
enough oil alone for the next 100 years. It would cost between 50 and 60
dollars per barrel to produce, a nice profit could be made for just slightly
more. The last time we attempted this OPEC dropped oil prices to $9.00
per barrel. See Picture 3.

President Bush has 8 years to develop an
energy policy that works. The truth is there
probably will be no new policy until there is a
new president. We approve of his current
ideas to improve our oil independence, but we
see no clear plan on how to ease the pain at
the pump. We do not see a clear path to
alternative fuels or vehicle from this
administration. Will Bush be remembered as
Carter is... Inflation and gas prices?
We here hope our current president keeps up
the pressure on congress to do something
(anything) to help. We just don't think
congress wants to listen right now.
More to come!
